Bruce R. Nelson, M.D.
Dr. Nelson graduated with high honors from Lamar University in 1979 with a degree in biology. After attending the University of Texas-Houston Medical School where he also graduated with honors, Dr. Nelson continued his education by completing his Family Practice Internship at the University of Texas Medical School in Tyler before completing a three-year Dermatology Residency at Baylor College of Medicine.

He furthered his training with a Fellowship in Cosmetic and Dermatologic Surgery at the University of Arkansas and served as an examiner for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery for three years. He then completed an additional Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery at the University of Michigan in 1989 where he was asked to remain as a faculty member and held faculty appointments in three departments (Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Plastic Surgery).

He taught Dermatologic Surgery there for five years and won multiple teaching awards from the residents and students. Dr. Nelson was the recipient of the prestigious American Academy of Dermatology's Academic Award for Excellence for his development and teaching of the University of Michigan's medical student dermatology curriculum, which included interactive student-patient conferences and seminars.

Dr. Nelson was offered a faculty position with the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Department of Dermatology in 1997 and quickly developed an excellent local reputation that complements his international reputation. His goal of providing more efficient, quality patient care was realized in September 2001 when he left his tenured professorship to begin the Dermatologic Surgery Center of Houston.

Dr. Nelson is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a Fellow of both the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. He is also a Fellowship Training Director of a fellowship program in Mohs surgery approved by the Mohs College. Dr. Nelson has the honor of having operating room privileges at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, which is quite rare for a dermatologic surgeon.
